    The Institute's programs include training for the professional development of Foreign Service administrative, consular, economic/commercial, political, and public diplomacy officers; for specialists in the fields of information management, office management, security, and medical practitioners and nurses; for Foreign Service Nationals who work at U.S. posts around the world; and for Civil Service employees of the State Department and other agencies. Ranging in length from a half-day to 2 years, courses are designed to promote successful performance in each professional assignment, to ease the adjustment to other countries and cultures, and to enhance the leadership and management capabilities of the U.S. foreign affairs community. Other courses and services help family members prepare for the demands of a mobile lifestyle and living abroad.

    Established in 1999, the Leadership and Management School helps employees, at all levels, build the leadership skills needed to advance America's foreign policy interests at home and abroad.
    -Offers a continuum of leadership and management training programs, to develop the leadership abilities of employees from entry level through senior ranks.
    -Helps bueaus and overseas milssions prepare for and deal effectively with crisis situations.
    - Coaches individual executives, to help them realize their professional potential.

    The Area Studies Division offers a range of courses to provide presonnel working in or on a geographic region with the knowledge of the key historical, political, economic, societal and foreign policy issues that will prepare them to carry out their responsibilities. The Division offers intensive Regional, Advanced Area and Distance Learning Courses. The courses are appropriate for both Department of State and other agency employees.

    PRGS is unique in American higher education. It was founded in 1970 as one of the original eight graduate programs in public policy. PRGS was the only program specializing in the Ph.D. It is also the only one based at a think tank--the RAND Corporation, which invented many of the analytical tools of public policy analysis.
