Webcast- Afghanistan in 2011: A Survey of the Afghan People

On November 15, the U.S. Institute of Peace will host the Washington launch of The Asia Foundation's "Afghanistan in 2011: A Survey of the Afghan People" -- the broadest, most comprehensive public opinion poll in the country. The report covers all 34 provinces, with candid data gleaned from face-to-face interviews with more than 6,000 Afghan citizens on security, corruption, women's rights, development, the economy, and negotiating with the Taliban.

Afghanistan Ten Years Later: Opportunities and Challenges for Development

The tenth anniversary of the war in Afghanistan is an opportunity to take stock of the humanitarian and development situation in the country. Although today’s headlines are focused on the military transition, there are serious development and governance challenges which need to be addressed to ensure the country's stability and the well-being of its citizens. The government of Afghanistan, Afghan civil society and the international community are looking forward to conferences on the future of Afghanistan to be held in Istanbul in November and Bonn in December, which will provide an indication of ongoing international support for the country.

The Peace Movement in Mexico: Efforts to Bring Justice to the Victims of Violence in the Country

In the midst of the drug-related violence that has resulted in over 50,000 deaths since 2006, Mexican civil society has begun to mobilize as an energized peace movement and thousands have marched across Mexico to demand an end to the violence, a change in security policy and justice for the victims.  On October 14, the Peace Movement held its second meeting with Mexican President Calderon and members of his cabinet to discuss the proposals they have developed on issues such as security and human rights, attention to victims, and citizen participation.

International Conference on Building Civil-Military Security Capacity
